Yoga for Beginners in Stoke-on-Trent: Everything You Need to Know Before Your First Class
Updated: Aug 9
Thinking about trying yoga but not quite sure what to expect?
Maybe you've never done yoga before. Maybe you're worried you won't be flexible enough. Or perhaps you've been meaning to try a class for years but haven't quite found the confidence to walk through the door.
If that's you, you're definitely not alone.
At Yoga By Noel, my aim is to make yoga approachable, friendly and accessible to ordinary people – not just people who can already touch their toes!
My weekly yoga classes take place at Fulford Village Hall in Stoke-on-Trent, and beginners are very welcome.
Here's everything you need to know if you're thinking about giving yoga a try.

Do I need to be flexible to do yoga?
Absolutely not.
This is probably one of the biggest misconceptions about yoga.
You don't need to be flexible before you start yoga. In fact, improving flexibility and mobility can be one of the reasons you start in the first place.
Yoga is about working with your body as it is today. You don't need to force yourself into difficult positions or compare yourself with anyone else in the room.
You simply work within your own comfortable range and gradually build from there.
Is yoga suitable for beginners?
Yes.
My classes are designed to be welcoming to people with different levels of experience, including people who have never tried yoga before.
You don't need to know the names of the poses, understand yoga terminology or have any previous experience.
I'll guide you through the class and explain what we're doing along the way.
The emphasis is on moving better, feeling stronger and becoming more confident in your own body.
What happens during a yoga class?
A typical class combines a mixture of movement, mobility, stretching, balance, strength and relaxation.
We'll work through different yoga movements and postures, with options and modifications where appropriate.
You don't have to get everything right.
Yoga isn't about performing the perfect pose. It's about learning how your body moves and finding ways to help it feel better.
You'll also have the opportunity to slow things down towards the end of the class, giving you some time to relax and reset.
What can yoga help with?
People come to yoga for all sorts of reasons.
You might want to:
Improve flexibility and mobility
Feel less stiff
Build strength
Improve balance
Reduce stress
Move more comfortably
Feel more confident
Take some time for yourself
Meet new people
Simply try something different
You don't need to have one particular goal.
Sometimes the biggest benefit is simply having one hour each week where you can switch off from everything else and focus on yourself.
What if I'm nervous about joining a class?
That's completely understandable.
Walking into a new class where you don't know anyone can feel daunting.
But you don't need to arrive knowing what you're doing.
I'll talk you through what you need to know, and you'll be able to work at your own level.
There's no expectation that you will be the most flexible person in the room, and there's no need to compete with anyone else.
Yoga isn't a performance.
It's your practice, your body and your pace.
Where are the yoga classes?
My weekly group yoga classes are held at:
Fulford Village HallStoke-on-Trent
Classes take place every Monday at 6pm and last for one hour.
The hall provides a spacious environment where we can practise together in a relaxed and friendly setting.
If you're looking for yoga classes in Stoke-on-Trent or yoga near you, I'd love you to come and give it a try.
What should I bring to my first yoga class?
You don't need lots of expensive equipment to start yoga.
I'd recommend bringing:
A yoga mat (if you have one)
Comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely
A bottle of water
Something warm to wear for the relaxation at the end
Most importantly, bring yourself exactly as you are.
You don't need to look like a yoga instructor before you walk through the door!
How do I book my first class?
Because everyone's health and circumstances are different, I ask new students to complete a short booking and health questionnaire before attending their first class.
This allows me to understand a little more about you, your previous yoga experience and any relevant health considerations before you come along.
Once I've reviewed your booking, I'll contact you by email with confirmation and any information you need before your first class.
You can find the full details on my Booking page.
What does a yoga class cost?
If you're completely new to Yoga By Noel, you can try your First Class Pass for just £5.
After that, you can choose from a range of class passes depending on how regularly you'd like to attend.
Regular attendance can be a great way to establish a routine and build momentum, but there's no pressure to commit to something that doesn't suit you.
You can see the latest timetable and prices on my Timetable & Prices page.
Why not give yoga a try?
You don't need to be flexible.
You don't need to be experienced.
You don't need to know what you're doing.
And you certainly don't need to be intimidated.
You just need to be willing to give it a go.
Whether you're looking to improve your mobility, become stronger, reduce stress, meet some friendly people or simply do something positive for yourself each week, yoga could be a great place to start.
Your first class doesn't have to be perfect. You just have to take the first step. If you're looking for beginner-friendly yoga in Stoke-on-Trent, I'd love to welcome you to Yoga By Noel at Fulford Village Hall.
